Dig in. All this wet brings incredible wild greens. Check out this handful of fresh chickweed (species Stellaria) and miner's lettuce (Clatonia perfolata), collected in a little clearing at the end of today's über-soggy hike. Can't you just see all the vitamins A, B, C, and D just dripping off the leaves? Okay, that's rainwater, but all those good V's are in there. Never mind that these greens taste sweet, fresh, and crunchy. Add a splash of EVO and a sprinkle of rice-wine vinegar blended with a little salt and pepper. Awesome.
When picking these, my daughter reminded me to avoid areas that looked like popular marking spots for neighborhood dogs--good point.
FYI, though I'll happily down chickweed (named because chickens love it), I'm still too "chicken" to forage for mushrooms. Could the name "death cap" have anything to do with that fear?
